Another Girl: The Song

Paul McCartney wrote this song while on holiday in Hammamet, Tunisia. However, as usual, the songwriting partnership of Lennon-McCartney takes credit for it. While McCartney was in the North African resort, he became a guest of the British government, and they gave him permission to holiday in their own villa on the coast.

This song is simplistic in its message, of course. The singer is basically informing his girlfriend that he has someone new in his life. Together with the rather aggressive line, “This time you’d better stop,” it repeats the equally aggressive line, “I ain’t no fool, and I don’t take what I don’t want,” three times. This suggests that the singer has no doubts or indeed regrets about the relationship he is ending.

There are beautiful three-part harmonies with the song title “Another Girl” throughout the song. But what is unusual is that John Lennon actually sings the highest part of the harmony. In fact, this is the only time that this happens in any Beatles’ song. Paul McCartney sings the lead vocal, while George Harrison sings in harmony with the title too.

Recording Another Girl

The backing track came from a single take on February 15, 1965, in Studio Two of the EMI Studios, London, during the 7.00 p.m.–10.30 p.m. session.

On the same day, the Fab Four were working on the songs “Ticket to Ride” and “I Need You” as well. Paul McCartney was actually playing the lead guitar at the time, and he added that piece the next day. The mixing down for “Another Girl” took place on February 18 and 23, 1965.

In The Beatles’ film “Help!” (1965), we see the Fab Four on Balmoral Island in the Bahamas having a good time while this song plays. Paul McCartney is lip-syncing to the song while standing on a coral reef.

However, we see George Harrison unusually playing bass guitar. We also see Ringo Starr playing the acoustic guitar while John Lennon is having fun on the drums! It’s all acted out in their own humorous way, of course.
