Baby It’s You: The Song
The Shirelles released “Baby It’s You” in late 1961, and it became a US top ten hit. The Beatles had already played the song live before recording it, so the arrangement comes across as confident and well-rehearsed.
The Shirelles’ influence turns up elsewhere on Please Please Me. The band also recorded “Boys“, another song strongly associated with The Shirelles’ live repertoire. Likewise, John Lennon once said Paul McCartney wrote “PS I Love You” while chasing the feel of “Soldier Boy”.
On Merseyside, cover versions were standard currency, and that suited The Beatles’ early identity as a live band. They played “Baby It’s You” regularly in Liverpool venues, including the Cavern Club, long before they recorded it.
Recording Baby It’s You
The Beatles recorded the main take of “Baby It’s You” on 11 February 1963 in Studio Two at EMI Studios, during the marathon session that produced most of Please Please Me in a single day. They returned on 20 February 1963 to add George Martin’s celesta part, which gives the finished recording its bright, chiming detail.
The 20 February 1963 overdub session was handled by George Martin, who added celesta while the Beatles were absent. On the UK album sequence, “Baby It’s You” sits on Side Two as the third track, followed by “Do You Want To Know A Secret.”
The Beatles also recorded the song for BBC radio. They taped it on 1 June 1963 for Pop Go The Beatles (broadcast 11 June 1963), and that performance later appeared on Live At The BBC. On that album, it follows the short spoken track “Sha La La La La!”, where the band are joking with presenter Brian Matthew.
