Written by another well-respected songwriting partnership, Goffin and King, “Keep Your Hands Off My Baby” became part of The Beatles live repertoire for a brief period. In fact, they sang it on their first British tour in February 1963. However, they only recorded it once, and that was for a BBC Radio programme.

Considering that The Beatles had not yet released an album, maybe this song could have been part of their first, “Please Please Me.”

“We might have run through Keep Your Hands Off My Baby, Little Eva’s follow-up to The Loco-Motion, at that session. Sometimes we learnt songs and did them once or twice, and then gave them up.”

Not only did The Beatles sing the song but many other famous artists did too. For example, Little Eva actually got to number 12 in the American Billboard charts with it in 1962. Other notable artists who recorded this song were Wayne Fontana, Helen Shapiro, Skeeter Davis, Kirsty MacColl and Lindisfarne.

Recording Studio

The Beatles were loving all the free promotions while they recorded for BBC Radio shows in the early 1960s. They recorded “Keep Your Hands Off My Baby” just once, and this was at the BBC Playhouse Theatre in London. That was on the 22nd of January, 1963, for the BBC’s “Saturday Club,” airing on the 26th of January.

Since the lyrics for Little Eva’s version included “That boy is mine,” The Beatles’ had to change this to “That girl is mine.”

This was an early BBC recording and is not of particularly good quality; however, they decided to release it on their 1994 album, “Live At The BBC.”
