John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote “I’m Happy Just To Dance With You” for George Harrison in order to give him a vocal part on the “A Hard Day’s Night” album and film. It’s an upbeat song, but it had to accommodate Harrison’s vocal range.

Although Harrison was lacking in confidence to compose his own songs, he certainly gave a confident performance in the film when singing the song. In fact, this performance gave the public a good account of what the lead guitarist could do as a lead singer.

Before Harrison takes to the stage to sing his song, there are dancers onstage dancing to a piano piece incorporating the song’s melody. When the song ends, Lennon says to Harrison, “Very good that, George.“

Recording Studio

The Beatles began recording “I’m Happy Just To Dance With You” on March 1, 1964, in Studio Two at the EMI Studios, London, during the 10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. session. There were 4 takes that day, with the final one being suitable for the master copy.

The band also recorded the song for the BBC Radio show “From Us To You,” airing on August 3, 1964. However, as of yet, there is no commercially available copy of that version.
