I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry (Over You): Background
This song is notable because it appears on Elvis Presley’s debut album from 1956, “Elvis Presley” (the UK release was “Elvis Presley Rock n’ Roll“). However, apart from Presley’s self-titled album, Roy Hamilton also recorded the song in 1954. While Hamilton sang the song in a jolly, jazzy, pop style, Presley gave it a rockabilly country slant.
The Beatles would often cover songs by American artists in order to establish themselves in their early years. They took this song under their wing and then gave it a rock-and-roll feel. In fact, it was part of their live repertoire at some point.
There is a recording of them performing it on the album Live! at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany, in 1962. However, that album has poor quality recordings, and The Beatles’ successfully won the rights to those performances and stopped their production in 1998.
Recording Studio
The Beatles were never ones to shun publicity, of course. So, in the early 1960s, as they were busy trying to establish themselves, they would often appear on BBC Radio programmes. They also recorded “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Cry (Over You)” for one of these shows.
The version that appears on their 1994 album, “Live At The BBC,” was from “Pop Go the Beatles,” which aired on August 6, 1963. They recorded this show at the BBC Paris Studio in London on July 16.
