I Got To Find My Baby: Background
Peter Clayton, aka Doctor Clayton, wrote and recorded “Gotta Find My Baby” in 1941, which later took the title “I Got To Find My Baby” when Little Walter and Chuck Berry sang it individually. Numerous others have also sung it over the years.
Chuck Berry’s single failed to make the charts in America after its release in August 1960. They didn’t release it in the UK at all, but The Beatles found it and liked it enough to record it for BBC Radio.
The Beatles would often cover songs from other artists during their formative years. Chuck Berry was obviously one of The Beatles’ favourite artists. In fact, the Fab Four sang more Chuck Berry songs than any other artist. So they were only showing their appreciation to the American rock and roll star.
Recording Studio
As The Beatles began to gain a reputation, they would often record songs for BBC Radio programmes. In this case, they recorded “I Got To Find My Baby” on June 24, 1963, at the Playhouse Theatre in London. This was for the “Saturday Club” show airing on June 29 of that year.
For this bluesy rock song, John Lennon sings and plays the harmonica, which was the norm for recordings such as this. Together with the usual line-up of Paul McCartney on bass guitar, George Harrison on lead guitar, and Ringo Starr on drums, the song is a typical example of how The Beatles became masters at their art of creating music.
The song is now available on their 1994 album, “Live At The BBC.”
